DEMON KNIGHTS Crowned Kings of Winter Classic!!!

winterclassicnews

The Gridiron Elite have now held three championship games for tournaments and each of them have been great games to see.  Each of them were covered by the Gridiron Elite staff, bringing pictures and video (coming soon) to the fans of semi-pro football.  And each of them have had the Empire State Demon Knights playing for the trophy.  The third time was indeed the charm as the Demon Knights defeated the Long Island Panthers in a true winter classic, 20-14 in triple overtime today at Granny Road field in Suffolk County.

It was a seesaw game that turned back and forth like the snowflakes in the stiff wind of old man winter.  The Demon Knights broke out the gates ith the 14 points which came by a solid performance by their quarterback #3.  Hitting multiple recievers in the first half including two touchdown passes, it looked like this game may be a run away.  The Demon Knights took advantage of poor punting and the inability of the Panther offense to score before the half to take the commanding lead.  Then the snow fell along with the lead as the Demon Knights were on the Panther 1 yard line in what was going to be the knockout blow.  But they went to a wildcat offense and the replacement quarterback #2 fumbled and just like that the Panthers were given life.  The Panthers marched down the field with a tough running attack that chewed up yards, and when #33 ran in  touchdown from 10 yards out the score was now 14-6.  On the ensuing kickoff the kicker squibbed the ball to the front line of the Demon Knights, #2 picked up the ball and headed for a clearing but was stripped and fumbled the ball back to the Panthers.  Again the Panthers drove deep into Demon Knight territory but could not punch in a score.  But after exchanging turnovers late in the quarter the Demon Knights found themselves on their own goalline facing forth down.  The Demon Knight kicker was able to get the punt away but the Panthers were set up inside the 30 yard line.  The Panthers then reestablished  their running game and drove into the Demon Knight red zone.  They converted a pass from #16 to #1 and that set the score at 14-12.  After a Demon Knight timeout, regulation came down to the two point conversion.  A masterfully executed misdirection to Panther player of the game #47 tied the game at 14.  Panther player #47 was all over the field on defense and really stepped up his game on this day.

Overtime started with an inch and half of snow firmly planted on the field.  The Gridiron Elite tournaments, which use college style overtime (shootout format) set up the wild finish as the mercury dipped below freezing.  The Panthers intercepted the Demon Knights first play in ot, and the favored was returned which took us into a second overtime.  The Panthers held the Demon Knights in the first possession of the second overtime and then drove the ball to the 1 yard line.  On second, third and fourth down, with the game in their hands and just inches away from a championship, the Demon Knight defense held and denied the Panthers the victory.  The third overtime began and the Panthers were unable to score and turned the ball over to the Demon Knights.  Then, after a few run plays that produced little yardage,  on third down Burney (quarterback #3 from the Knights) connected on a pass over the middle to #2 who made a fantastic catch at the 2 yard line fumbled the ball into the air, and in what must have seemed like a lifetime, #24 from the Demon Knights jumped into the air and came down with the ball and as he crossed the goalline the Demon Knights had won the inaugural Gridiron Elite Winter Classic.  Congrats to Shawn and the rest of the Demon Knights on their victory, and a job well done to the Long Island Panthers who battled to the end.  A great game to end the 2009 season in memorabe fashion.  Stay tuned for complete video coverage of the game including highlights and interviews.  Highlights From Winter Classic

Jets and Knights To Battle For GEYFL Crown

coverThe snow started to fall in the tri state area yesterday, which signals two things.  First that winter is coming fast, and second is that playoff football in the city is in full swing.

Today in Harlems 128th Street field, the Gridiron Elite Youth Football league superprep division held its semi-final round games.  In the the first game, the Knights took an early lead on the underdog Wolfpack.  The orange and blue rallied late scored on a saftey  to bring the score within 6 going into the final quarter.  After driving down the field with a punishing run game, the Wolfpack then tied the game.  The Knights then took advantage of great field position and converted  a scor late to pull out the victory.  Congrats to them and the Wolfpack as they gave the fans a great game to watch.

The second half of the doubleheader saw the Bronx Rebels and Harlem Jets collide in an epic battle.  After winning both contests during the regular season, the Rebels thought they would make 3 in a row after #5 returned 2 kickoffs for touchdowns.  However, Harlem Jet quarterback #23 led an air assault and also moved the ball on qb keeps to tie the score up and go touchdown for touchdown with the top seeded Rebels.

Finally in the 4th quarter the defensive line of the Jets took over and forced pressure and turnovers.  The last coming with a minute left in the game as Jets defensive tackle #93 was in the Rebel backfield at critical points.  The Jets pull out the W, and move on to the Championship Game  to face the Knights.

Stay tuned to GridironElite.org for “Game of The Week” coverage of the Rebels Jets game including full video coverage.

Winter Classic Championship Preview

The season is winding down, and as we say goodbye to 2009 we set it off to the record books in the same style we brought it in with.  In true Gridiron Elite style, the Gridiron Elite opened the 2009 season with an epic  Spring Classic and now they are ending the year with the crowning of the Winter Classic Championship game.
The site will again be Gridiron Elite Stadium, and for the third straight tournament championship we will see the Empire State Demon Knights.  Will this be the Demon Knights time to be crowned Champions?  They have been playing good football all year as they finish up their 3rd season of 2009.  The spring campaign ended with a disappointing 32-25 los to the New York Spartans, and a successful RAFL campaign was cut off prematurely by a first round playoff loss.  This Demon Knight team is resiliant as they enter the championship game after beating the Long Island Panthers, their long time island rival.  The Connecticut Gamblers on the other hand find themselves in the big game with very little buzz.  The Gamblers took care of business in the preliminary rounds, trudging through mud to beat the Panthers, Westchester Steelers and then advanced into the championship game to face the Demon Knights.
We sat down with Shawn Spencer, owner and player for the Empire State Demon Knights to get some insight into the big game.
Q)  What are your impressions of the Gridiron Elite Winter Classic and its products/events?
 A)   The GIE are raising the bar on minor league football…Run by people who not only actually care, but also have a clue its the PREMIER tournament action on the east coast regardless of time of year..
Q) What would it mean for your team if you take home the Championship.. (looking towards next season)?

A.) Winning the Winter classic is the perfect springboard for recruiting and giving current players faith in the system.  Plus its a part of history.  Once you are the 09 champions, it stays that way forever.

Q) How do you prepare (prepare your team for a CHampionship game?

A.) Every game is the championship.  We dont prepare any differently for this game than any of the last.  Good Practice and an in depth game plan session where the players insert thier input is the way we get our team organized.  Weve been winning with a certain formula and it would probably only be detrimental to alter it.
Q) Tell us something about your program that not many people know about?

A.) This is the only place where the commited run the asylum.  This team is more of a brotherhood than just a sports organization. Everyones input is not only heard but appreciated and after years of trial and error the right balance of owner control vs player participation has been struck.  The Demon Knights EVERYONE has a piece of the ownership.
Q) What are your 3 major keys to winning this game?

A.) Steady , Control , discipline
Meaniing we got here using certain plays and strategies.  we arent going to experiment now.
No panic when the other team does things right.  Understanding we just have to be right MORE OFTEN
Everyone just does there job rather than try to make all the plays

Q) Anything Else to add?

A.) Thanks to the GIE for making this one of the best events we have particiipated in to date…

Make sure you catch all the action on December 13th at Gridiron Elite Stadium.  Stay tuned to the latest info on the Championhip and other Gridiron Elite products.
