The 3rd annual Gridiron Elite Spring Classic kicks off in 2010 with the competition better than ever. With the champions of 2009 and 2008 both in the mix along with the winter classic champs it definately has the makings of another exciting spring. Last year the New York Spartans won the tournament as they defeated the eventual Gridiron Winter Classic Champions Empire State Demon Knights.
Also in the running to be crowned the champ are the Kings Bay Knights who ran through the competition unbeaten until the playoffs last year. The Nassau Punishers who are the new name of the 2008 Champion Long Island Ravens. You also have the New York Venom and Connecticut Ravens who made things very interesting last year in competing for a playoff spot and with the Venom a triple overtime victory away from the postseason they will be looking to get over the hump. The Westchester Steelers come into the tournament with plenty of history but none in the spring so we will see what they have to offer the field. The Long Island Panthers are always good for a tough battle in the trenches with thier tough hard hitting defense.
Other new teams in the mix include the Gridiron Elite Superprep All Stars who will be comprised of a group of top organizations in the area. The New York State Broncos made some big moves last year rebounding from a tough 2008 campaign which included tough games against top notch programs like the Westchester Packers and Spartans. The Brooklyn Bulldawgs round out the field with speed on both sides of the ball and a never say die attitude.
The tournament will be working out of two sites this year but with the expanded field you will be able to enjoy tripleheaders on some weekends. The divisions are split as follows:
Freedom Division
CT Ravens, NY Venom, NY Spartans, Super Prep Elite, Westchester Steelers, NYS Broncos
Patriot Division Brooklyn Bulldawgs, Kings Bay Knights, Empire State Demon Knights, Brooklyn Blue Devils Nassau Punishers, Long Island Panthers
Teams will play everyone in their division once except for one opponent. All teams have one crossover game with a team from the opposite division with teams competing in the same leagues matchups avoided until the playoffs.
